The garden city
Al Ain, which lies close to the Oman border,
is a leisurely, laid back emirate. Culturally important and
rich in ancient history, this is the home of the only university
in the UAE. Surrounded by the mountains of Oman, and Jebel Hafit
peak adding character to the landscape, Al Ain has its own special
charm. This Oasis country has a rich agricultural heritage thanks
to a vast subterranean water supply channelled through ‘falajes’
for many thousands of years to provide irrigation to its lush
palm groves.
Archeological sites at Hili Garden where an oasis culture dating
to 2000BC has been discovered adds to the emirate’s appeal;
along with the Fossil Valley. The old fort preserves these artefacts,
while the Al Ain museum showcases the social life of the people
of Abu Dhabi over the centuries.
Tranquil and beautiful, Al Ain offers many recreational options.
Camel races and amusement parks delight its many visitors alike.
The Al Ain Zoo is home to an enormous collection of wildlife
including many rare desert animals. The only desert-based aquarium
in the world is here too, with sea lions, penguins and over
50 species of fish.
